M-Power Ministries
The GED program is a 12-week course offered twice annually, enrolling
up to 30 students. Students must meet certain baseline academic
requirements. Classes
include writing, social studies, math, science, personal development,
computer skills, budgeting, and goal setting. GED Course objectives
include
developing the skills necessary to succeed in an academic environment,
improving academic abilities, implementing a personalized GED study
plan, and
developing a post-GED transition plan. Students who complete the GED
Course are better prepared to either take the GED or enter into a
self-directed GED
study. Time spent with M-POWER instructors builds confidence and self-advocacy skills.
With changes in the GED test, effective January 2014, M-POWER is in
the process of updating curriculum and making sure our students are
prepared for a more
difficult and costly test. In 2014, the GED will cost $150, as opposed
to $50, will be completely electronic, and will require students to pass
all five
sections at one time. In the past, students have been able to retake
sections where they failed. These changes create a greater fear of
failure, which
makes the work of M‑POWER even more important, as our holistic approach
to education fosters growth in self-confidence and self-advocacy.
