Response to Subject by Design: Marriage God's Way - A Book Review, Part Two

Subject by Design wrote, "No one ever write a book on marriage and include instructions on when a husband is relieved of his duty to love his wife like Christ loved the church.”

There's never an occasion when love is not an order. Love is unconditional (that's one of the characteristics of agape) Love never fails (1st Cor 13:8). As Christians, we are instructed to love our enemies so love covers all bases. Since love is unconditional and never fails, there is never an occasion when a husband
(or wife) is relieved of their duty to love their spouse.

Although love is conditional unconditional and never fails. submission to authority is conditional. and there are multiple examples to support that in Scripture. It's called civil disobedience, and it's biblical.
The position the Scriptures uphold is one of biblical submission, with a Christian being allowed to act in civil disobedience to the authority if it commands evil, such that it requires a Christian to act in a manner that is contrary to the clear teachings and requirements of God’s Word.

Suject by design wrote, "Pastor LaPierre entitles a subsection Submission Does Not Mean That Wives Submit to Sin.  I disagree, based upon what Peter said about Sara making herself subject to Abraham."

Sarah bore Abraham's buderns and prefered his need (preservation of his life) before her own virtue. Therefore, her example is an important one, but it's not the only one presented in scripture about submission to authority. We, unlike Sarah, have a progressive revelation of God's word. God did not unfold His entire plan to humanity in the Book of Genesis or in the entire Old Testament. God revealed various aspects of His will and overall plan for humanity over different periods of time from Genesis to Revelation. Paul said, "ALL SCRIPTURE is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work" (2 Tim 3:16-17).

Examples of civil disobedience:

Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God (Ro 13:1). 1 Pe 2:13-14

Jonathan disobeyed his king. Jonathan refused to comply with the king's plan to kill David - God's choice for king. I Sam 19 & 20.

Nabal's servant went behind his back and informed Abigail about his decision to withhold bread, water and meat from David and his men. The servant obeyed Abigail rather than Nabal and took David and his men food and wine. The servant disobeyed Nabal's wishes. Nabal almost got himself and all the men in his house killed, but David spared Nabal's life and the lives of the men in his house because of what Abigail and the servant did (1 Sam 25).

The king instructed the midwives to kill the newborn Hebrew boys, but the midwives refused to kill the infants. As a result, God was kind to the midwives and gave them families of their own (Exodus 1:15-22).

Then Pharaoh gave this order to all his people: Every Hebrew boy that is born you must throw into the Nile, but let every girl live (Ex 1:22). However, Moses' mother refused to kill him. Moses' mother is listed in the Hebrew hall of faith ( Heb 11:23).

So the king of Jericho sent this order to Rahab: "Turn over the men who came to you--the ones who came to your house--for they have come to spy on the whole land!" (Jos 2:3). Rahab disobeyed and hid the Israeli spies rather that turn them over to her government (Jos 6:25). Rahab is listed in the Hebrew hall of faith ( Heb 11:31).

All the royal officials at the king's gate knelt down and paid honor to Haman, for the king had commanded this concerning him. But Mordecai would not kneel down or pay him honor (Es 3:2).

The royal officials all agreed that the king should issue an edict and enforce the decree that anyone who prays to any god or human being during the next thirty days, except to you, Your Majesty, shall be thrown into the lions den. 8Now, Your Majesty, issue the decree and put it in writing so that it cannot be altered in accordance with the law of the Medes and Persians, which cannot be repealed. 9So King Darius put the decree in writing. (Dan 6:7). However, Daniel refused to stop praying to God.

The  3 Hebrew boys refused to bow to king's golden idol (Daniel chapter 3).

Amos continued to prophesy at Bethel right after the king ordered him to stop (Amos 7:10-17).

The rulers, elders, and scribes assembled in Jerusalem commanded  Peter and John to stop  speaking or teaching at all in the name of Jesus. Peter and John refused to stop speaking and teaching in the name of Jesus (Acts 4:18). The apostles were brought before the Sanhedrin to be questioned by the high priest. "We gave you strict orders not to teach in this name,รข€ he said. Peter and the other apostles replied: We must obey God rather than human beings! (Acts 5:29).

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right (Ep 6:1). Col 3:20, Ex 20:12, De 5:16

Jonathan disobeyed his father. He refused to comply with his father's plan to kill David  - God's choice for king (I Sam 19 & 20). Saul was Jonathan's governmental authority (king) and parental authority (father).

Wives, submit yourselves to your own husbands as you do to the Lord. Eph 5:22, Col 3:18, 1 Pet 3 :1, Tit 2:5.

Abigail disobeyed her evil husband's foolish instructions. Abigail went behind Nabal's back, and against his wishes she sent David and his men bread, water and meat. Because of Abigail's actions and wise words, David decided not to kill Nabal and the men in his house.  The Bible states that Abigail was intelligent with good understanding, while her husband was an evil fool (1 Samuel 25:1-42).

According to a law established by the king, Esther's husband, no man or woman was suppose to approach the king in the inner court without being summoned. The penalty for approaching  the king in the inner court without being summoned was death, unless the king decided to grant  the person mercy (Es4:11). Esther disobeyed that particular law. She risked her life by approaching the king in the inner court without being summoned in order to intercede for her people (Es 5:1). Long story short, Esther found favor with the king and was able to help save the Jews from annihilation.

The Bible teaches that wives should submit to their own husbands. However, the Bible also teaches the value of civil disobedience when and/if someone in authority commands evil,  and requires those under their authority to act in a manner that is contrary to the CLEAR teachings and requirements of God’s Word. Husbands are not exempt. Husbands have absolutely no authority or right to command/demand their wives to commit what the Bible CLEARLY defines as sin and evil.

Sapphira is an important example for wives. Her's is a cautionary tale. She teaches wives what not to do. Ananias and Sapphira sold some property together. HE (Ananias) kept back part of the money for HIMSELF. Sapphira knew about her husband's misdeed, and she (according to Eph 5:11) had a duty to expose that fruitless deed of darkness rather than conspire with him to lie about it.

In Eph 5:11, before Paul ever addressed a wife's duty to submit to her husband, he addressed a Christian's duty to  "have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them." In Eph chapter 5, Paul never ever stated that wives are exempt, excused or relieved of their Christian duty to "have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them. Sapphira was not exempt, excused or relieved from her Christian duty to "have nothing to do with the fruitless deeds of darkness, but rather expose them.Too bad for her, she had to learn that lesson the hard way.

News reports illustrating some dangerous consequences of wives obeying sinful instructions given to them by their husbands:

Adam Mayes' infatuation with a 12-year-old girl led him to plot her abduction for a year and kill her mother and sister. The wife of Adam Mayes admitted to helping him kidnap and murder members of the Bain family. Mayes' wife didn't get pardoned for submitting to her husband in sin. She was sentenced to 35 years

Wanda Barzee says she learned to be submissive and obedient. Wanda Barzee helped her husband, Brian Mitchell, kidnap Elizabeth Smart so he could use her for his sex slave. Wanda Barzee didn't get pardoned for submitting to her husband in sin. She was sentenced to 15 years in federal prison for her role in the kidnapping and sexual assault of Elizabeth Smart.

A Bonner County woman who helped conceal the body of a murder victim out of fear and misguided devotion to her husband was sentenced to two years in prison.

Police say the little girl's mother wanted to get her formula and medical care, even sharing her concerns by phone and text message with their spiritual advisor. But in the end, she obeyed her husband when he said no. Their infant daughter died of starvation. Lauren Fristed was sentenced to 20 years in prison with 10 years in confinement. She didn't get a get out of jail free card because she submitted to her husband in sin.

Leslie Yerger “participated in one of the most egregious and horrifying cases of child sexual abuse ever seen in Chester County,” said Rock, who was co-counsel in the case with Ryan, in his sentencing memorandum, “Her inaction and participation in these activities made the vocalization possible and represented only the latest incarnation of sexual abuse perpetrated by Warren Yerger over a total of 23 years.” Although Rock acknowledged that Leslie Yerger’s cooperation had been useful in gaining a conviction against her husband, who took the stand to declare that he was innocent of all the charges against him, he nevertheless had harsh words for her actions involving the children. Her “behavior is indefensible,” Rock wrote. “There is no rational excuse for (her) to have engaged in these heinous acts against young children. She was not forced to do anything. She could have left. She could have resisted. She could have said no. She could have called for help. Instead, she participated in the unthinkable abuse of children and allowed (Warren) Yerger to continue his brutal victimizations for decades more.” Leslie Tether didn't get pardoned ( a get out of jail free card) for submitting to her husband in sin. She was given credit for the months she spent in prison awaiting trial. She will have to serve five more years before being eligible for parole. After her release, she will serve 10 years of consecutive probation.

Inspirational testimony about a mom who refused to submit to her husband's sinful ultimatum and get an abortion.

Molly Anne Dutton is the daughter of a young, married woman who survived a sexual assault in California and became pregnant, To compound matters, the woman’s husband gave her an ultimatum: Abort the baby or get a divorce. Rather than having the abortion, Dutton’s mom chose to move to Alabama and carry the baby to term. She worked with Lifeline Children’s Services, a Christian adoption group in Birmingham, Ala., to place the child in a home.
